Celebrating Easter at Mt. Horeb!

During the Easter Season we recount the stories of the Risen Jesus appearing to his followers. Each Sunday we read a story from the Gospels that tells us about these appearances.

May 8 is Mother’s Day. A special project to support the ELCA Malaria campaign will be offered. Mothers will be wearing net corsages that are available for $10. These monies will be put towards purchasing mosquito nets for mothers in Africa to prevent the spread of malaria.
Mt. Horeb will be joining with the community for Relay for Life, May 6, 7pm, at Chapin High School, to raise support for American Cancer Society and cancer research. On Saturday, May 7, Mt. Horeb pastors will perform a special Bike Blessing at the Tour deCure Bike Rally that is being held at the Little Mountain Reunion Park. The blessings will be 30 minutes before the start of each race at 7:30am and 9:30am. Bring your bicycle and support the Diabetes Association efforts.
The Children’s Choir at Mt. Horeb will have its Spring Musical, “It’s Cool in the Furnace,” on Sunday, May 15, 6pm. A spaghetti meal will be served at 5pm with proceeds benefiting the summer music camp. Third and Fourth Graders will be recognized as part of Mt. Horeb’s Milestone Ministry for meeting with parents and the pastors and learning the Ten Commandments.
After one and a half years of growing in our knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, a Day of Celebration will take place on Sunday, May 22, during the Sunday School hour. We will celebrate the Book of Faith Initiative and the congregation’s completion of Reading Through the Bible. High School graduates will also be recognized during worship at this Sunday.

The Season of Lent at Mt. Horeb

This Sunday we hear the words of God’s covenant spoken to Abraham and Jesus’ words to Nicodemus, “You must be born of water and the spirit.” Through Holy Baptism God promises to raise us up with Christ to new life.

Each Wednesday throughout the Lenten season, a meal will be served (6pm) with a prayer service (7pm) following. A meditation will be shared about one of the Old Testament Prophets, corresponding with the congregation’s Book of Faith Read Through the Bible. On Wednesday, March 16, we will focus on the prophet Isaiah.

A special presentation of the Newberry College Choir (6pm meal; 7pm Choral Performance) will take place March 23. This will the first stop and beginning of the choir’s Spring Tour.
The Links With Mission Golf Tournament that is scheduled for Saturday, April 2, at the Timberlake Country Club. Player/Team registrations and sponsorships are available in the church office. Lutheridge Summer Day Camp is scheduled for July 11-15. Preschool through fifth grade may register. Contact the church office for info.

Read Through the Bible for the New Year - We continue our reading on Monday, January 3, beginning with 2 Chronicles. Reading schedules and Reflection Questions are available in the Fellowship Hall. Join one of the Bible Discussion Groups! See Info Table for meeting times.

Sunday School Opening Each Sunday at 9:45am – Children Preschool through Fourth Grade will gather for an opening before going on to their Sunday School classes.

Plan to Attend the School of Religion – Each Tuesday in January (Jan. 4, 11, 18, and 25) classes are offered 7pm-9pm at Grace Lutheran Church in Prosperity. Topics include: The Sacraments, Unforgettable Moments in Church History, How Do We Know Jesus?, and a Youth Bible Study.
Cost is $10.

Leisure Timers Host Lowman Home Residents - On Tuesday, Jan. 4, 10:30am, Lowman Home residents will come to Mt. Horeb to play Bingo and share a covered-dish lunch.

WOW Bible Study Thursday Nights - A lecture series on the Book of Revelation will be presented each Thursday at 6:30pm.

O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear.

Sunday, Dec.19, Mt. Horeb’s choir will present in Scripture and song the Christmas Cantata, “The Christmas Light,” at both morning worship services with Holy Communion. That afternoon at 3pm everyone is welcome to join Mt. Horeb’s youth and the Peace Frogs (3rd-5th grade children) as they go caroling to shut-ins and the elderly. We will meet at the church and split into groups; afterwards we will gather at the Hatchell’s for a bonfire.
Christmas Eve worship services are a special tradition at Mt. Horeb. Join us for any of the following Friday services: 11am Mid-day Service with a light lunch to follow; a Family Bell Service at 5pm; and Traditional Candlelight Services at 7pm and 11pm. Each of the services will be by candlelight with Holy Communion. A variety of seasonal music is planned.

On Sunday, Dec. 26, a Lessons and Carols service planned at 10am. We will have just one worship service with a time for morning fellowship at 9am. No Sunday School will be held on Dec. 26.
SMOKED HAMS AND TURKEYS for the holiday season. Mt. Horeb’s Global Missions Committee is taking orders until Dec. 19. Proceeds will support ongoing mission projects.

Celebrating Advent at the Mount!

Awake! Awake, and greet the new morn, for angels herald its dawning. Sing out your joy, for soon he is born, behold the child of our longing.
We continue the Advent Season with words of hope from the prophet Isaiah of how God brings forth life in places where there is hopelessness. As God’s people we wait with patience for the coming of the Lord, even as we rejoice at his presence this day. We pray that God would open our eyes and ears to the wonders of Christ’s advent among us.

The Children’s Christmas Program, “Aaron the Allergic Shepherd,” will be presented Dec.12, 6pm. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. The program will also be presented Saturday, Dec. 11, 2pm, in the Nursing Center Activity Room at The Heritage at Lowman for the residents.

An “Advent Reflections” class will meet the next two Sundays in Room #201 during Sunday School. We will take time for reflection during this busy time and discuss how to appreciate this time of waiting and watching for the coming of Jesus.

Next Monday, Dec.13, 7pm, is Lutheran Men’s Ladies Night. A catered meal will be served. If interested call the church office by Dec. 9. The annual Preschool Christmas Program will be presented on Thursday, Dec.16, at 11am. On Sunday, Dec.19, Mt. Horeb’s choir will present in Scripture and song the Christmas Cantata, “The Christmas Light,” at both morning worship services.

Preparing This Advent at Mt. Horeb!

Prepare the royal highway; the King of kings is near! Let every hill and valley a level road appear! Then greet the King of glory, foretold in sacred story. Hosanna to the Lord, for he fulfills God’s word!
We continue the Season of Advent on Dec. 5 with Holy Communion at both worship services. At the heart of our Advent preparation stands John the Baptist, who calls us to prepare by repenting and making a new beginning. In addition, the Rite of Holy Baptism for Briana Fulcher will be celebrated at the 11am worship service.
Various activities are planned for Sunday, Dec.5: the youth group will go bowling, 5-7pm, with LFS group home girls at Anchor Lanes (cost $5); Peace Frogs (3rd-5th graders) will meet 3:30-5pm to have a book exchange; the Friendship Shuffle group will at Timberlake for brunch at 1pm; the GIRLS (middle school) group will meet at 2:30pm to study the Bible character, Ruth; the Dorcas Circle will gather at Hilda Beaver’s home and have a gift exchange; and we will celebrate the completion of Part 2 of the Book of Faith Read Through the Bible (Genesis-I Chronicles) with refreshments at 9:40am in the Fellowship Hall.
The Leisure Timers group will meet Tuesday, December 7, 10:30am at the church for a covered dish with the Methodist Misfits. Members are asked to bring a dish to share.
The community won’t want to miss the upcoming Children’s Christmas Program, “Aaron the Allergic Shepherd.” It is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 12, at 6pm.

Giving Thanks At Mt. Horeb!

The King shall come when morning dawns and light triumphant breaks, when beauty gilds the eastern hills and life to joy awakes.
One worship service will be held at 10am this Sunday morning, Nov.21, for Christ the King Sunday. Mt. Horeb’s Children’s Choir will sing. The Rite of Holy Baptism will be conducted for Ava Grace Williams. The congregation’s Annual Congregational Meeting will be held afterwards with a lunch following.
Mt. Horeb Youth will meet this Sunday, 5:45pm, for a special Youth Thanksgiving Feast, with music, picture show, and devotional message. The Community Thanksgiving Service will take place Sunday, Nov. 21, 6pm, at Chapin Presbyterian Church. Mt. Horeb will host a Thanksgiving Holy Communion Service Wednesday, Nov. 24, at 7pm.
Smoked ham and turkeys for the holidays will once again be available. Tickets can be purchased at the church office to support Global Missions. Deadline for Thanksgiving is Nov. 21. Pick up date is Wednesday, Nov. 24, 4-6pm.

God’s Word forever shall abide, no thanks to foes, who fear it; for God himself fights by our side with weapons of the Spirit.

The Rite of Confirmation was celebrated Oct. 24 for the following ninth grade students as they made public profession of their faith: Avery Harrison, Jenna Hill, Zachary Mc Call, Nathan Miller, Drew Minges, Phillip O’Connor, Taylor Rister, and Katie Wessinger.

The Festival of Reformation will be recognized on Oct. 31. The Chancel Choir will sing special anthems and lead us in traditional hymnody, as the freeing message of God’s Word and the gospel of Christ is proclaimed. The Heartland Conference Reformation Service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pomaria, Sunday, Oct. 31, at 3pm. The Rev. Dr. Julius Carroll, Director of Contextual Education at Lutheran Southern Seminary, will be the guest preacher.
Twenty-one youth and six adults will be attending a weekend Fall Beach Retreat at Coastal Retreat Center, Oct. 29-31. “We Believe…” is the theme as they will participate in Bible Study and worship on the beach.

Mt. Horeb Leisure Timers will head out for a road trip on Tuesday, Nov. 2, at 10:30am, to Ridge Spring to visit The Nut House. Call the office or sign up on bulletin board.

This Sunday the Rite of Confirmation will be conducted at the 11am worship service. We will lay hands and pray for God’s Spirit to fill and empower the following ninth grade students as they make public profession of their faith: Avery Harrison, Jenna Hill, Zachary Mc Call, Nathan Miller, Drew Minges, Phillip O’Connor, Taylor Rister, and Katie Wessinger. They have completed two years of reviewing the foundational teachings of the Church, attended a Campfirmation week at Camp Lutheridge, and completed their confirmation blog (baptismal-log) which is an expression of their personal faith in God.

We had a great DJ and Talent Night last Sunday at Mt. Horeb! Thanks to all who performed and came out to support each of our entries. We had a lot of talent on display.

DJ and Talent Night is Oct. 17, 4pm-7:30pm. There will be a variety of different acts performed and good music! Some tasty finger food and drinks will be served. Bring finger food or dessert to share.
The congregation is reading through the Bible together as part of its Book of Faith Initiative. Members are reading through the Old Testament of their Bibles from August 23- Dec. 3 and participating in Bible Discussion Groups. We have read from Genesis through Deuteronomy thus far.
